Before you start the ascent to Cogne, it is well worth taking a break in Aymavilles, dominated by the crenellated towers of its Castle and surrounded by the vineyards of some of the most famous wineries of the region: La Cave des Onze Communes, Les Crêtes, l' Atoueyo and Gerbelle Didier.

In addition to the pretty countryside and good wine,  in Aymavilles you’ll also find a wealth of examples of the history and arts of the Aosta Valley, including its famous castle, Saint Martin's church and Saint Léger's church.

The Roman Aqueduct - Bridge Pont D'Ael

Pont D'Ael Roman Aqueduct - Bridge - Pont d'Ael - Aosta Valley

Built in 3 B.C. by two Roman settlers, Aimus and Avilius, over the gorge of the Grand Eyvia, the aqueduct is an imposing piece masonry built using stone blocks measuring 82 m tall and over 50 m in length.

It is one of the most compelling monuments of the Roman era, still perfectly preserved and open for visits.

The city of Aosta is still the custodian of several relics of the Roman era, including the unique Arch of Augustus, the Porta Praetoria, the Roman Theatre, the Criptoportico Forense and the city walls which are almost fully intact. It is a city rich in history and culture, where visitors can admire some of the most spectacular edifices of the medieval era, including the Cathedral and the Collegiate Church of Sant’Orso.
